AbstractNon-local geomorphometry is a rare subject of Geographical Information System (GIS) studies and resource developments. Among the non-local topographic variables, dissecation is a well-known topographic parameter that expresses the maturity of the terrain throughout the geomorphological development. In GIS, it can be achieved through the analysis of the regional height dispersion found in Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. This research proposes a method for the calculus and mapping of dissecation, which is conceptually related to terrain analysis techniques. The steps of the developed procedure comprise the gathering of regional elevation records to a point, the numerical analysis of their distribution, and further classification (un-supervised techniques) and filtering. All steps were applied on both original (~90m) and refined (~30m) SRTM data of the study site, a 1:100.000 quad at São Carlos (SP, Brazil). Results were compared with the input DEM, besides a previously developed height map and data from published soil map. Dissecation calculated from SRTM-90m was best for the partition of the landscape into meaningful regional segments. Classification furnished best class distinction when applied on terrain segments, instead of applied directly on continuous results. Dissecation, elevation and height were shown to be statistically independent and complementary variables in the description of relief. When tested as potential inputs for soil mapping, the numerical and the classified form of dissecation description were indistinctly useful.
